Tom Hanks in talks to turn Green Day Musical into film
Playtone partners Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman are in talks to turn Green Day’s “American Idiot” Broadway show into a feature film. The play hasn’t even opened to live audiences yet (opens April 20), but there is already a lot of buzz around it.
The last film Playtone turned from Broadway to feature film was “Mamma Mia!,” and while the critics didn’t rave about the film, fans loved it. The film brought in $610 worldwide, becoming on of Universal Pictures’ biggest hits ever. Hanks and Goetzman have a first-look deal with Universal for “American Idiot,” but Nikki Finke at Deadline.com stated that she has heard that the “producers will sew up the movie rights before giving the studio first crack.”
“American Idiot,” uses the hit songs of punk band Green Day to tell the coming of age story of three small-town guys. There is little dialogue between the songs, but most fans will go to see the play for the songs, not the actors. The musical is directed by Michael Mayer and Green Day’s lead singer, Billie Joe Armstrong, has been very involved in the entire process.
