Colin Firth in “The King’s Speech”
“Because I have to cry every so often for a living, I find it horrifying if it spills over into my daily life. I’d probably cry if I got a splinter, but for anything emotional, the best I can muster is a lump in the throat. Especially if there are any witnesses.”

Firth played gay professor in A Single Man to go nude before 50

Colin Firth says he decided to step into the shoes of a gay professor for his Bafta award winning role because he wanted to go nude before turning 50. Firth's role in A Single Man has not only won him much critical acclaim and a best actor Bafta but also got him a nod for the 82nd Academy Awards.

"I pick up the script and it says, 'Naked man lies on bed.' And then a few pages in, 'Naked man jumps in ocean'...'Well,' I thought. 'It's time. One more push against gravity before I turn 50 and it's all downhill'," says Firth.

Talking about his Oscar nomination, he adds: "I'm not very hopeful, I'm afraid. "It's just nice to get the nomination, frankly."

Colin Firth to play Lehi commander in new film

British actor to perform role of Avraham 'Yair' Stern in director Michael Winterbottom's 'The Promised Land'

British actor Colin Firth ("Single Man") will play the Lehi founder and leader, Avraham "Yair" Stern, in director Michael Winterbottom's upcoming film "The Promised Land." Lehi was a militant Jewish underground movement active during the time of the British Mandate.

Firth's casting for the role was announced during the Berlin Festival, at which Winterbottom is showing his most recent film "The Killer Inside Me."

"The Promised Land" will be filmed this summer and will tell the story of two British police officers and their struggles with Lehi activity. The officers will be played by Jim Sturgess and Matthew Macfadyen.

Winterbottom has been planning for some time to direct a film that takes place on the backdrop of British Mandate Palestine. In an interview given at the Jerusalem International Film Festival a year ago, the British director told Ynet that too little is known among English audiences about what happened under the British occupation of the area during the Mandate and that he believes that period has many implications on the present time.

Winterbottom added that he plans on focusing in on the Jewish underground in the film, which is slated to come within the next year. In addition to casting Firth, it was reported that Fortissimo Films signed a distribution agreements with the film's producers.
