Robert Downey Jr. has made quite the comeback in Hollywood. After suffering from drug addiction in the past, he’s rebounded with an even better career than what he started with.

In the new issue of Playboy via Us Magazine, RDJ talks about his new life as a clean and sober adult.

"Not having done drugs for literally five or six years is a lifetime," he says in the new November issue of Playboy. "I think of myself as someone who has no desire, use for or conscious memory of that life. And yet I don't shut the door on it, and I don't pretend it didn't happen."



Downey admits he sometime has "very strong" flashbacks of his life as a "messed-up kid ... lost, lost in narcotics."



He compares talking about drug addiction to "a veteran of a war that is difficult to discuss with people who haven't been there."

"Looking back, I think, 'Oh my God, I could have been done. I could have been so fried and so bad off and, oh my God, such a cautionary tale,'" he says. "And I still could be."

But now that RDJ is clean, he says the important part is to not feel sorry for yourself. "You take responsibility, whether you're outraged by the results or not...." he says. “People who think 'I'm a victim; I'm being victimized!’ are out of line." (Lindsay...)

"My age and my recent set of experiences ... have left me feeling I'm in the zone," he says of his revived career. "This is just the sweet spot of my career and my life so far, and strangely, they've come at the same time."

Hopefully Lindsay Lohan will read this article! As much of a mess as she is right now, there is hope for her! Downey is 20 years older than her and having the best success of his life…stranger things have happened!

Director Sam Raimi has officially been given the reins to direct the prequel to 'The Wizard of Oz' (which up until now was a project that was still very much up in the air as Raimi continued to work on his World of Warcraft adaptation). You'll remember that this is the film called 'Oz: The Great and Powerful', and it tells the origins story of how the Wizard of Oz became, well, the Wizard of Oz. It'll track him from his days as a circus wrangler through to when a tornado brought him to the magical land of Oz. David Lindsay-Abaire, who wrote the play 'Rabbit Hole', is currently re-writing the script.



One of the big reasons Raimi wanted to do 'Oz 'is so that he could work with Robert Downey Jr., who's still in negotiations to take on the role of the Wizard (fingers crossed those negotiations end with Downey Jr. in the part). Raimi is better known nowadays for his work on the 'Spider-Man' movies, however the Raimi that sticks in my mind is the one responsible for the 'Evil Dead' franchise and the gory, gruesome images that resulted (he later turned the franchise into a parody of itself with 'Army of Darkness').

While 'The Wizard of Oz' is mostly known for being cute, a modern turn would likely be more twisted as with the recent 'Alice In Wonderland' movie, which was made by the same studio behind this 'Oz' movie, Disney.

The Gene Siskel Film Center paid tribute to actor Robert Downey Jr. Sunday night.

Before the event, Downey talked about how Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert influenced him when he was going to the movies.

"I just feel like they were the initial people∧ I always liked particularly when they disagreed because that meant I could go see which one I agreed with, which would vary from year to year," Downey Jr. said.

The Ironman star was joined by Todd Phillips, who directed The Hangover and Downey's wife, producer Susan Downey.

She was valedictorian of Schaumburg High School's class of 1991. She wanted to show him her high school while they're in town but said they wouldn't have time.

"Just to be sincere about it, like, that's where I spent so much of my formative years and deciding where I wanted to go and what I wanted to do and stuff. And, I'm sure it's still there," she said.

Robert Downey Jr. received the Gene Siskel Film Center Renaissance Award and took part in a discussion led by Phillips.

Money raised at the event benefits the Siskel Center's presentations, lecture series, and discussions with visiting scholars and filmmakers.

Disney’s next 3D film, Oz: The Great and Powerful, will be directed by none other than the legendary Sam Raimi. Even though Sam Mendes (the man behind American Beauty, Jarhead and Revolutionary Road) appeared to be Disney’s top choice for the position, Raimi’s decision to walk away from Spider-Man 4 freed up his schedule just in time to sign on for the project.

The prequel—a retelling of the classic L. Frank Baum fable from the perspective of the Wizard—has also signed Robert Downey Jr. on to play the lead role, according to MTV. The film will follow Downey’s Wizard character who, before being carried to the land of Oz by a tornado, is a circus wrangler. He is crowned wizard of the land after being mistaken for a leader with magical powers.

The film’s script was written by Mitchell Kapner, who also penned Romeo Must Die, and will be produced by Alice in Wonderland’s Joe Roth. There is still no scheduled date for its release.

Robery Downey Jr, as superhero Iron Man, takes the latest cover of Entertainment Weekly, on stands Friday.

The 45-year-old actor shares that he further explored his character’s demons for the sequel. He shared, “The last time around, Tony Stark was a significantly cooler version of me. In a way, my calling in this one was to bring more of myself into it and more of my character defects.”

RDJ also talked about Iron Man 2’s box office prospects: “With Sherlock Holmes, I said, ‘We’re blowing Avatar out of the water.’ I was personally shocked at the cosmos when it did not respond to my incantations. I’m doing the same garbage this time.” Hah!

Iron Man 2 opens everywhere next Friday, May 7!

Not satisfied with fighting corporate crime as Iron Man or investigating steampunk crimes in the revitalized Sherlock Holmes, Robert Downey Jr. is negotiating for another SF project, this time directed by Children of Men's Alfonso Cuaron.

The movie, Gravity, was originally conceived as a vehicle for Angelina Jolie, before she dropped out following original studio Universal's refusal of the project. Now ensconced at Warners, Cuaron (who co-wrote the script with son Jonas) plans to shoot the movie this summer, allowing Downey the chance to be free for this fall's shooting of the second Sherlock Holmes. Assuming deals can be worked out, Downey will play the commander of a space station who loses his crew when an asteroid explosion kills them during a spacewalk, and has to work out a way to get back to Earth with only one remaining crewmember. Like so many other projects in this post-Avatar world, Gravity will be shot in 3D, making exploding asteroids that little bit more real.

Robert Downey Jr. is negotiating a deal to star in Gravity, the 3D space film directed by Alfonso Cuaron. Warner Bros and Legendary Pictures will co-finance.

Cuaron wrote the script with his son, Jonas.

Downey will play the leader of a team posted at a remote space station. While he and a female colleague are traveling outside the space station, the other team members are decimated by debris from an exploded satellite.

The script had been developed originally at Universal with the intention of having Angelina Jolie play the female role. Much of the film is devoted to her struggle to get back to Earth and her daughter. Jolie passed around the time Universal cut it loose. Downey was drawn to the chance to work with Cuaron, the director of Children of Men and Y tu mama tambien. The actor's starpower gives Warners execs a confidence boost because right now, how many actresses can carry a big sci-fi film themselves, outside of Jolie?

Downey will shoot the film in London this summer, finishing in time to re-team with director Guy Ritchie and Jude Law in the Sherlock Holmes sequel that will shoot early fall, also in London.

Friday was family day for actor Robert Downey Jr, who was spotted picking up a John Courage Amber beer poster with his 16-year-old (so all of you -- take a seat) son Indio and then doing a bit of window shopping in Venice Beach with his wife Susan (January 29).

After picking up a Golden Globe last week for his work in Sherlock Holmes, Robert joked, "First of all I'd like to thank Susan Downey for telling me Matt Damon was going to win so don't bother to prepare a speech!"

Indio's mom is Robert's ex-wife Deborah Falconer.
