Jim Carrey and his girlfriend Jenny McCarthy decided to call time on their five-year romance because they were "no longer hitting their stride" — insiders say.

The pair took to Twitter last week to announce the news they had split.

And sources insist there is absolutely no animosity between Jim and Jenny — their break-up was fairly simple and the duo will always remain friends.

"Jenny said it became very Jerry McGuire-esque, in the sense that she had this great guy, and he loved her kid, but they were no longer hitting their stride," the pal told America’s OK! magazine.

"She said when she and Jim worked, they worked — and when they stopped working, it was done, just like that.

"She just looked at him and was like, ‘You love me like a family member that’s never going anywhere, not like a woman who you can’t wait to make love to’.

"Jim just stared at her for a minute before admitting that he was in love with Jenny and her son Evan as a package, but he couldn’t get his mind right, he wanted to, but somewhere along the way, he lost it.

"Jim sees Evan every day. Even though he and Jenny are totally and 100 percent over romantically, they’ll be friends forever."

Jim Carrey isn't crying over his recent breakup with Jenny McCarthy – at least not publicly.

Hours after announcing his split Tuesday, Carrey was back to work in Los Angeles, filming a promo for Idol Gives Back – American Idol's annual star-studded charity special.

"You would never have known that [the breakup] had just happened," says a source. "Jim is a constant professional."

Carrey, 48, who filmed the spots in an adjacent studio to where the live American Idol telecast was taking place, was joined by fellow funnymen Russell Brand and Jonah Hill – and the three were in high spirits.

"Jim was loose and relaxed," the source says. "It was a lot of fun."

Idol Gives Back will air on April 21.

Jim Carrey may be the happiest grandfather around. The funny man has Tweeted a photo of his first grandchild, Jackson Riley Santana.

Jim calls Jackson, who was born Friday, "California Dynomite" -- that's Jim's spelling -- and he obviously couldn't be prouder of his daughter Jane and her husband Alex Santana.

The 47-year-old actor became a first-time grandpa Friday when his daughter Jane welcomed her first child with her musician hubby, Alex Santana.

Son Jackson Riley Santana was born at 12:28 a.m. in Los Angeles, weighing 7 pounds, 11 ounces and measuring 20 inches long, E! News confirmed.

Carrey revealed that his baby was having a baby in July. "I am very excited," he said at the time. "Jane is going to be a great mom."

Jane and Alex, both lead singers in their respective rock bands, tied the knot November. Jane is Carrey's daughter with first wife Melissa Womer.

Being honored overseas, Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor were made knights in the prestigious National Order of Arts and Letters at the Ministry of Culture in Paris, France on Monday (February 1).

Feeling comfortable with their masculinity, the duo went so far as to give one another a big kiss on the lips at the day’s ceremony.

During the knighthood session, French Culture Minister Frederic Mitterrand proudly declared, “I love you Jim Carrey! I love you Ewan McGregor!”

As for their trip to France, Jim and Ewan are busily promoting their upcoming gay romance, “I Love You Phillip Morris.”
